Mac Clone: Psystar dituntut Apple
Rupanya Apple minggu ini menuntut perusahaan Psystar gara-gara komputer Mac Clone dari Psystar. Nama komputernya adalah Open Computer. Tujuannnya adalah untuk mensupport penggunaan MacOS-X pada komputer yang non-Apple (alias PC biasa). Sehingga kita tidak usah membayar $599 (minimal) untuk membeli Mac paling murah (MacMini) hanya demi memakai MacOS-X.
Seharga sekitar $399, Open Computer dari Psystar memakai 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM (667MHz), dan 250GB Hard Drive.
Bagi Apple sebagai OEM, pasaran Apple hardware penting sekali untuk dijaga ketat. Itu sebabnya dari dulu Apple melarang adanya komputer2 clone Macintosh. Padahal andaikan saja MacOS-X bisa di gunakan pada PC biasa, mungkin saja banyak perusahaan dan konsumen yang pindah ke MacOS-X.
Dari segi open source, apakah hardware bisa di jadikan “open source”? Kalau memang bisa, bagaimana dengan situasi seperti ini dimana kita dilarang menggunakan suatu software (operating system) pada hardware milik kita sendiri.
Dear Steve, I think you should make 2 versions of MacOS-X: one for the Mac hardware and another for the PC hardware. This would help Apple enter the Enterprise market since companies can retain their PC hardware and transition to MacOS-X with less pain. My 2 cents

I really don’t think Apple should accommodate 3rd party software. Do you remember how the mac clone really sucky when Apple allowed those? Plus that means they must add a considerable budget to the R&D department just to support millions of new hardware in which they have little control of.
Your hardware is yours to do whatever you want with it. But the software isn’t. There’s a strict ToS and EULA even before you install the software in which you have to agree to install it in non-Apple hardware.
Although for the sake of hobby, I guess it’s okay as far as you don’t have any monetary gain from it. I mean, OSX86 community already run for almost 3 years now without any cease and desist letter or any lawsuit from Apple. Now Psystar is another different ballgame. They break the EULA + having monetary gain from the work of the community (the boot loader anyone? They use it for profit and none of those goes to the community that made it possible, I say sue them to the ground!)

With regards to Apple, the current Apple hardware platform is already Intel-based. I think almost 75% of the components on the Mac platform today is basically PC components. If Apple wanted to enter the corporate IT enterprise market (in a serious way), it will face the usual problems of integrating with the existing Microsoft infrastructure (ie. think Active Directory). I was thinking that in order to make transition easier, make it easier/cheaper for the Enterprise to transition. It will be too hard to expect IT organizations to switch overnight to Apple hardware.

saya setuju pak, apple kalo mau kaya bikin macos utk non-apple HW, windows juara gara2 tak tergantung platform, mslh kompatibilitas itu urusan vendor, bahkan microsoft bisa menjadi standard maker krn OSnya dipakai banyak org

gw sendiri pakai distribusi kalyway 10.5.2 . sudah 4 bulan pakai jadi keenakan .
ya gw setuju aja psystar ini di tuntut sama apple. soalnya OS itulah kekuatan dari Apple. Contohnya gimana kalau Iphone juga yg mana OS nya adalah MacOSx- lalu di copy orang dan di instal ke Handphone lain, apa si Steve gak ngamuk lagi
anyway ini kan buat hobby doank, gw juga pakai gak buat kerja. kok ada orang jualin . apalagi di mangdu juga mulai ikut2an , wadah norak dah. yang beli juga lebih norak lagi
Setuju. Kalo Apple bikin OS-nya gak tergantung sama hardwarenya Apple doang,pasti bisa nyaingin Windows.
